1. And so it began (My Transition Journey)

My name is Penny. And I’m a girl. But I wasn’t always. I was born a boy! That’s the gender that I was assigned at birth. But ever since I can recall, I’ve always felt like I was a girl on the inside. It wasn’t until I hit 18 that I finally realized that I was a girl on the inside.

It all started when I was little. I never felt like I fit in with the other boys, always felt more comfortable around girls. I liked playing with dolls and wearing dresses. But my parents just assumed that I was going through a phase. They kept telling me that I was just a tomboy and that, eventually, I would grow out of it.

But I didn’t grow out of it. If anything, it only got worse as I got older. By the time I reached high school, I knew that something wasn’t right. I didn’t feel like I belonged in the boys’ locker room or on the boys’ sports teams, just felt like I was living in the wrong body.

I tried to ignore these feelings for a while. But they were always there, nagging at me. Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore. I had to do something. So, I started doing research online about transgender people and gender identity. And that’s when everything clicked into place.

On my 18th, I realized that I was transgender. I remember vividly the day that it dawned on me. I was watching “The Danish Girl,” which is a movie with a transgender theme. Everything just clicked into place. Suddenly, all of the feelings that I had been experiencing made sense.

It hasn’t been easy. There have been some bumps along the way. But overall, I’m happy with the decision I made. And I’m finally starting to feel like I’m in the right body. This is my story.

2. My First day as a girl in public

I had been doing it behind closed doors for years. But on this day, I decided to take the plunge and go out in public dressed as a girl. It was liberating, empowering, and scary all at the same time. But it was also an important step in my journey of self-discovery.

There is no one right way to know that you are something other than the gender assigned to you at birth. However, for those of us who do experience a mismatch between our internal gender identity and our sex assigned at birth, it can be an incredibly difficult journey to reconcile these two aspects of ourselves.
